First non-surgical treatment to reduce a double chin

KYBELLA® is the first non-surgical treatment for reducing a double chin and slimming your facial profile.

KYBELLA® treatments performed in the comfort of our Philadelphia Norristown office get rid of fat under your chin. They slim your facial profile by reducing your double chin and upper neck with a series of quick treatments.

How long does it take for KYBELLA® to work?

KYBELLA® is a non-surgical method of reducing excess fat beneath the chin, which some may call a “double chin” or submental fullness.

KYBELLA® involves a series of double chin injections of a synthetic form of deoxycholic acid, which is a naturally occurring compound in the human body that eliminates fat cells (adipocytes) and removes their ability to accumulate fat in this area, resulting in a noticeably slimmer profile under the chin.

Once these fat cells are destroyed, they do not regenerate, meaning you can expect your results to last long-term without further retreatment.

KYBELLA® is the first treatment designed specifically to reduce or get rid of a double chin. It was FDA-approved in early 2015 specifically for the improvement in the appearance of moderate to severe under-chin fullness from submental fat in adults over the age of 18. The application of KYBELLA® to reduce fat in other areas of the body has not been fully investigated.

How can KYBELLA® improve my features?

KYBELLA® is particularly useful for those who are bothered by the fat underneath their chin and upper neck and would like to improve their side profile without surgery. In fact, about 67% of those surveyed by the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery in 2015 fall into this category.

Submental fullness, or double chin, can come about in a number of different ways, including simple genetics as well as weight gain and aging. Excess fat under the chin and the upper neck area can be unflattering particularly during a side-on profile view.

Prior to the advent of KYBELLA® chin injections, submental fullness could only be treated with surgical options such as liposuction or neck lifts, which carry a greater risk of complications and longer downtime.

Now with KYBELLA®, a non-surgical option is available to improve your chin profile (and self-confidence with it!) with visible results achieved after only 2 to 4 treatments.

Am I eligible for KYBELLA® treatments?

Not everyone who is dissatisfied with their chin profile will be a good candidate for KYBELLA® treatments. KYBELLA® is not used for the treatment of loose skin under the chin or around the neck, sometimes referred to as a turkey neck. Though clinical trials suggest some tightening of the chin and neck skin does occur through the application of KYBELLA® double chin injections, a turkey neck or neck waddle is best addressed with a surgical neck lift.

Infrequently, submental fullness may be caused by an underlying medical disorder such as thyromegaly or cervical lymphadenopathy, and for some, the reduction of submental fat may actually result in an undesirable cosmetic appearance, such as those with excessive loose skin. A trained facial plastics and facial rejuvenation specialist, such as Dr. Meghan Brooking, D.O. will be able to advise you as to whether the KYBELLA® treatment is the best option for treating your double chin.

As KYBELLA® has not been studied to a sufficient degree in groups of people under the age of 18 or over the age of 65, nor in pregnant and breastfeeding women, it is advisable to avoid undergoing KYBELLA® treatments if you fall into any of these categories.

How long does it take for KYBELLA® to work?

The procedure with KYBELLA® chin injections may take a number of months as most patients require 2 to 3 treatments, spaced about a month apart. Sometimes, up to 6 treatments may be necessary to achieve the desired outcome. At each visit, the treatment should take about 15 to 20 minutes, with the exact number of chin injections dependent on the amount of submental fat and the final profile you wish to achieve. As everyone’s chin profile is unique, as is the desired amount of chin and neck contouring, a face-to-face consultation with Dr. Brooking is important to determine how best to harness the KYBELLA® treatment to reach your goals.

Once the fat cells in your chin are destroyed with KYBELLA® treatments, expect your results to last long-term without further retreatment. Destroyed fat cells in the chin will not regenerate.

What are the potential KYBELLA® side effects?

The most common KYBELLA® side effects during clinical studies were those related to reactions at the injection site (chin), including swelling, pain, numbness, bruising, redness, and small areas of hardness, such as from the development of nodules.

More serious side effects are also possible, especially if the KYBELLA® treatment is performed by an untrained or inexperienced clinician. This may include injury to the facial nerve from an injection too close to the nerve, difficulty swallowing, and alopecia (localized hair loss) or tissue death (necrosis) around the injection site.

This is why it is critical to trust your KYBELLA® treatments to a trained facial plastics and facial rejuvenation specialist such as Dr. Meghan Brooking, D.O.

Will I see the results of KYBELLA® immediately after treatment?

No, the results of each KYBELLA® chin injection will take at least a week to become noticeable, with further slimming improvements after each injection. Immediately after the KYBELLA® treatments you are likely to have some degree of swelling or bruising around the underside of the chin and may wish to take a short time out to recover before resuming your normal activities.

How much does KYBELLA® cost for double chin treatment?

After a comprehensive consultation with Dr. Brooking, D.O., during which she will examine the submental area and discuss with you your desired profile, you will be provided with a quote based on the number of injections and treatments anticipated to get you to your goal. For your safety and to achieve optimal results, it is important to use the services of only experienced and trained specialists in the area of facial rejuvenation even if cheaper options may be available elsewhere.
